OXFORD AMERICAN Announces "Lifetime" Literary Award.
For Immediate Release: 27 September 2006.

The Oxford American magazine is pleased to announce that the Arkansas writer Donald Harington will be the recipient of the first-ever Oxford American Lifetime Award for Contributions to Southern Literature ("The OA Lifetime Award," for short). The OA Lifetime Award consists of a trophy created by a local sculptor, a full-page announcement in the next issue of The Oxford American, and a prize of $5,000.

Mr. Harington will be honored at a ceremony hosted by The Oxford American on October 4, 2006, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Among the speakers will be the writers Miller Williams, Jack Butler, Molly Giles, and Kevin Brockmeier.

"We've had the idea for this award for a long time and we're elated that it's finally sprung to life," said Oxford American founder and editor Marc Smirnoff, "and we couldnlt be happier than to give the first OA Lifetime Award to Donald Harington, whose lasting contributions to Southern and American letters is clear to anyone who reads him."

The OA Lifetime Award, voted by the editors of the magazine, will now be given annually.

Mr. Harington, a Distinguished Professor of Art History at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, is a highly regarded novelist. Though usually considered a cult favorite, Mr. Harington's writing has won over big-league readers and earned a permanent place in the American literary canon:

"Donald Harington is one of the most powerful, subtle and inventive
novelists in America." -Washington Post

"An undiscovered continent." -the writer Fred Chappell

"One of America's great contemporary novelists." -Boston Globe

"Both unclassifiable and a genuine pleasure." -New York Times

"Twisty diction worthy of Nabokov." -The Believer

"America's Greatest Unknown Novelist." -Entertainment Weekly

Mr. Harington's first novel, The Cherry Pit, about Little Rock, was published by Random House in 1965, and since then he has published twelve other novels, most all of them set in the imaginary Ozark hamlet of Stay More. These novels include The Architecture of the Arkansas Ozarks, The Cockroaches of Stay More, The Choiring of the Trees, and, most recently, The Pitcher Shower.

Now headquartered at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway, Arkansas, the award-winning Oxford American magazine has focused on Southern culture since its inception in 1992. Among past contributors: Willie Morris, Donna Tartt, Peter Guralnick, Roy Blount Jr., Charles Portis, and, posthumously, William Faulkner, Walker Percy, Zora Neale Hurston, James Dickey, Carson McCullers, and James Agee. This past year, Mr. Harington contributed a fictionalized account of the life of the Arkansas artist Carroll Cloar for the magazine's "Southern Art Issue."

"Obviously, there are many great Southern writers making profound contributions to American literature," Smirnoff said. "It was a very difficult choice for us to highlight just one person. On the other hand, it was also an easy choice: Donald Harington is a unique talent."
